HYDERABAD: Motorola Inc. today opened its new research and development centre at Hyderabad with an investment of close to Rs 60 crore. The facility would accommodate more than 1000 engineers and carry out R&D activities on cutting edge software for intelligent user interface used in Motorola phones apart from working on WiMax, network management and autonomics, security and high availability platforms.

The centre was inaugurated by Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Rajasekhar Reddy in the presence of Edward J Zander, chairman and chief executive officer, Motorola Inc. The facility is built on about 2.3 acres of land having a built-up space of 1.67 lakhs sq.ft.

Speaking at the inauguration function, Zander said that the new R&D facility will be involved in development of software solutions for Motorola mobile phones and working on development software for low-cost infrastructure solutions including WiMax technologies, he said.

About 40 per cent of the software used in Motorola phones is being developed by Motorola Software Group's India design centres.

In June, the company had signed an MoU with the Tamil Nadu government to set up a handset and telecom equipment plant at Sriperumbudur. The company had announced that it would invest $ 100 million on the plant. Production at the plant is likely to commence next year.
