NEW DELHI: Department of Telecom today granted license to global telecom
player AT&T to offer national and international long distance services in
India.
However, DoT has asked the operator to furnish an undertaking of compliance
with FDI guidelines that would be finalised by the government by January 2,
2007. The Union Cabinet had given three months extension to DoT to enhanced FDI
in the telecom sector.
The committee set up by DoT to look in to the license applications, had
recommended the department to approve the license in August. Currently 11
telecom companies have applied for long distance license with DoT.
US-based AT&T Global Network Services had formed a joint venture company with
Mahindras. AT&T holds 74 per cent in the company.
