Lalu Prasad, union minister of railways, has launched the reservation of rail tickets through mobile phone at a function in New Delhi. The mobile-based ticket reservation will be on Hutchison Essar and Reliance Infocomm in the National Capital Region (NCR), to begin with, on an experimental basis.
This facility will be extended to 120 cities across the country subsequently. Other mobile services including the public sector BSNL and MTNL are expected to join soon. The services will be available under the aegis of Indian Railway Catering & Tourism Corporation
(IRCTC).
Speaking on the occasion, Lalu Prasad said that the mobile phone-based rail reservation would benefit common masses largely by saving them the hassles of commuting to, parking at, and standing in serpentine queue at the reservation counters.
The minister announced that with the expansion of high-tech rail reservations, about 9,000 rail travel agents all over the country would be dispensed with to save the railways from the menace of touting in the purchase of tickets, pick pockets, as also defrauding the railway exchequer.
Lalu Prasad also announced that the government was considering introduction of credit card-based purchase of ticket for common man so that on that basic ticket could be purchased and the remaining amount in the card be adjusted while purchasing ticket later.
