The laying of the 3175 km Tata Indicom India-Singapore Cable System, the 5.12 terabit capacity undersea cable, in the Indian seabed commenced with the departure of Tyco Telecommunications' cable ship, the CS Tyco Durable.
Tyco Telecommunications is the turnkey supply contractor for VSNL's Tata Indicom India-Singapore Cable system.
"This will be VSNL's first self-owned undersea cable, further adding to the diversity we offer to our customers through our existing international bandwidth capacities we currently operate. This cable, with 5.12 terabit capacity international bandwidth, alongwith our NLD backbone will enable us to offer the highest levels of service at reasonable tariffs to our customers in India as well as foreign geographies", said VSNL director operations-on board the CS Tyco Durable at Chennai-N Srinath. "Our endeavor is to commence commercial operation of the cable by 4th quarter of 2004, to be able to enhance the robustness, uptime and reliability of our end-to-end connectivity offering to our corporate and broadband customer base at the earliest. We are glad with the progress of the cable, which exhibit Tyco's strengths and over five decades of expertise in undersea fiber optic systems," he added.
The cable system will run between Chennai and Singapore. The cable system will have an initial capacity of 320 Gbps with the ability to scale up to its design capacity of 5.12 Tbps. With an estimated operating lifespan of 25 years, the new cable will connect Chennai to Singapore, from where onward extension to the US and other significant geographies is readily available at competitive prices.
