Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd has launched a hi-tech data-transfer networking service called the virtual private network
(VPN) employing the MPLS technology. The service was simultaneously launched across ten cities in the country, via a live
videoconference from Bangalore made possible by the new VPN.
Pune BSNL principal general manager RL Dube told scribes that the technology was particularly suited for companies and business houses with a national presence. Dube said that the new technology could make the existing leased line system redundant because it could result in savings upto 80 percent for the customers.
BSNL, which promises a 99 percent uptime with the new technology, would also sign a unilateral services agreement with customers, promising to pay back to the customers two percent of the rental fee for every 10 hours of downtime. Citing the cost difference BSNL deputy manager (computers and services) L Murali Madhavan mentioned that a company with four branch offices in the country spends nearly Rs 15.5 lakh every year on the existing leased line system for data transfer. However, with the new VPN technology, the same company would end up spending as little as Rs 4.78
lakh. In the new system, the customer would pay BSNL only for the local leased line link and the VPN connectivity charges.
The VPN technology offers bandwidth on demand (scaled upto 155mbps), video conferencing and voice over Internet protocol
(VoIP). The service, which has already been launched in four metros besides
Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Ernakulum, may be accessed from all state capitals in the country.
