Within a short span of 40 days of launching its service in Mumbai, AirTel, a mobile service provider, has registered a record number of 100,000 customers in the city. Bharti Cellular launched AirTel mobile services in Mumbai on July 24, 2002 and introduced a slew of benefits for customers. This included a 30-second pulse, free roaming on AirTel networks across the country, incoming calls free from any AirTel to AirTel mobile across India, and free airtime on one international, one national and one local number without any monthly charges.
Added an elated Sanjay Kapoor, Executive Director, Bharti Cellular Ltd, “The response to AirTel has been overwhelming across Mumbai and Maharashtra. We understood the need gaps of the customers and leveraged our pan-India footprint to offer some never-before benefits to our customers. These propositions have succeeded in re-defining customer expectations and are fuelling the growth of the mobile category in the Western Region.”
Bharti has already invested Rs 1500 crore in the Western Region. Encouraged by the customer response, plans have been firmed to augment the level of investments in the Western Region. AirTel from Bharti Tele-Ventures operates services in fifteen of the 22 circles in India. Bharti’s mobile footprint covers 93% of all mobile phone users in India cutting across 1.8 million sq. km in 16 states touching 600 million people.
