Telecom operators are under continuous pressure due to the burgeoning
subscriber base, sharply rising site rentals, need for denser coverage and new
tower restrictions. Thus, making sharing of passive infrastructure critical for
their growth. It is all the more important to monitor the operational issues, as
well as energy consumption, to leverage the network and security investment more
efficiently and effectively. The need has lead to some of the vendors coming out
with green solutions for telecos to help them cut power consumption.
Site Monitoring Control System
Site monitoring control system (SMCS) is one such solution for telecom site
power solutions. SMCS, offering a centralized management, is a compact
integrated power feeding solution. The technology provides voltage
stabilization, automatic mains failure switch, health check-up logic, fuel
saving logic, and distribution and alarm panels. SMCS enables high-performance
businesses to consolidate and simplify the management of telcos network
infrastructure to increase security, reduce costs and realize operational gains.
The technology also sports a user-friendly LCD interface alongside unique
protection features, and genset fuel saving functionality, by sensing battery
voltage and shelter temperature. In addition to fuel savings, reduced operating
hours of genset leads to longer intervals between maintenance. In short, all
this implies longer overall lifetime of the genset. The technology was recently
introduced by Delta Electronics in India. SMCS is expected to fulfil the need of
telcos to keep a watch on power bills.

Battery Monitoring System
Battery monitor is a diagnostic system designed for lower cell count
applications such as telecom or stationary battery systems. It identifies
potential problems by continuously monitoring parameters such as cell voltage,
overall string voltage, current and temperature. Automatic periodic tests of
battery internal resistance verify the operating integrity of the battery. The
technology optimizes useful battery life. Instead of waiting for an inevitable
failure, or replacing batteries prematurely to prevent problems, one can
continue to utilize batteries longer and with confidence by knowing their true
internal condition. The technology is ideally suited for telecom and cellular
applications. Emerson network power offers this technology.
Power System Controller
The power system intelligent controllers concept enables a scheduled start-up
process of rectifier depending on the source of input. This means the genset can
be reduced to half its size, which in turn means that the genset operates at a
far better fuel-to-electricity conversion rate. The key factor of the technology
is that it optimizes the genset size and operating point, which can save up to
30% of fuel during genset operation. A larger genset means a larger investment.
On top of that comes the operating expenses. With fuel prices skyrocketing, we
are all forced to look for ways to decrease fuel consumption. Delta Electronics
offers this technology.
In addition to the scheduled startup process, power plant controller comes
with a comprehensive set of features for monitoring the devices on site. It can
check the genset operating status, warning the user when fuel or oil levels
drop, or if the temperature rises. A web server is integrated with configuration
and monitoring possibilities. Remote monitoring works with modem, LAN or SNMP;
and wireless infrastructure is supported as well as fixed-line communications
and DSL. A number of controller parameters can now also be modified via SNMP,
the functionality of our controller software.
