Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, which made a grand entry last year after being corporatized, remains on the top with total revenues of Rs 23,500 crore. VSNL has retained its No 2 position with a revenue of Rs 6,508.1 crore. MTNL and ITI also have been able to maintain their earlier positions. Wipro, meanwhile, managed to improve its ranking by one notch. Cisco also rose to the No 8 position from No 10 last year. HFCL, which ranked fifth last year came tenth this year with a turnover Rs 889.3 crore.

Year 2001-02 saw three new entrants to the Top 10 club—LG, Sterlite, and SPCNL—while Hindustan Cables, Lucent Technologies, and TCIL bowed out. The total turnover of top ten companies for the FY 2001-02 was Rs 44,532.3 crore, which is 69 percent of the V&D100 company revenues. Communication services companies led the pack with 67 percent of revenues, while equipment companies followed with 24.7 percent. Other services companies’ revenues contributed 8.3 percent.

Fixed services, of which BSNL has the lion’s share, grew at 4 percent. Total fixed revenues for 2001-02 reached Rs 30,247.5 crore.

The Next 90
Lucent Technologies, which slipped out of the top 10 list, was first on the next 90 list, followed by TCIL and TCS. Cellular services companies topped the Next 90 list in terms of revenues, which stood at Rs 5,515.9 crore (excluding handsets). Idea Cellular led the cellular services companies at No 13, with a revenue of Rs 600 crore. These cellular companies, which are 15 in number, are fast moving up the ladder and some of them are expected to make an entry into the Top 10 club next year. The cellular segment recorded a growth of 39.3 percent—the highest growth among all communication services.
