Punjab Communications (PUNCOM) ended the FY 2001-02 with a turnover of Rs
157.5 crore. This is just 7 percent higher than the previous year’s turnover
of Rs 147 crore. The net profit also grew marginally to Rs 5.9 crore from Rs 4.8
crore in 2000-01. The company had notched up four times higher growth in
2000-01, and it was 39 percent in 1999-2000.
Punjab Communications, with a strong customer base among PSUs, manufactures
equipment for satellite communication and optical transmission, besides digital
exchanges, point-to-point radio equipment, CTI, and digital and analog
multiplexers. In recent times, the company has also made in-roads in the private
sector by acquiring clients like ABB, HCL Comnet and L&T.
It has facilities to provide international connectivity services, in
collaboration with VSNL. This includes leased Internet services, co-location of
server services, Internet dial-up services, through direct optical fiber
connectivity from its facilities to the US. This fiber link also makes available
the resources of the vast VSNL network and around 1.5 Gbps of symmetric (1:1)
international bandwidth to the node at PUNCOM. The local connectivity for
customers is provided through point-to-point radio links as well as leased
landlines.
