"Convergence has forced vendors to focus on IMS development"

How was FY 2004–05 for Wipro in the telecom space?
The telecom solutions group of Wipro Technologies has achieved record sequential q-on-q growth for the last eight quarters. Currently, telecom is the largest industry segment for Wipro Technologies.

What is the revenue split between domestic and international telecom businesses?
Our product reselling business is predominantly India centric while 95 percent of our product engineering services are for global vendors. Around 80 percent of our telecom revenue comes from product engineering and the balance is from product-reselling.

Equipment vendors bring 86 percent of revenue and the rest is from carriers.

What is the top telecom revenue generating vertical for Wipro?
Our growth in product engineering services has come from broadband, wireless (infrastructure and handset), and next-generation networks. OSS/BSS is the key driver in telecom carrier space.

What were the industry and technology trends in telecom software?
Wipro is working with network equipment vendors in the buildout of 3G network elements and is also building competencies on smartphone programs. The major thrust areas in carrier voice space are: SIP-based solutions, entire product outsourcing/transitioning, class 5 migration, and MSOs and RBOCs moving towards triple play. The driving market for carrier voice is in the APAC region. In enterprise voice segment we foresee a market for enterprise collaborating tools and technologies facilitating transition to SIP-based VoIP in enterprise.

The coming of convergence and multimedia communications over IP has forced all major equipment vendors to focus on IMS product development. Most of them are signing up co-development contracts. Also, service providers are increasingly going for service delivery platform (SDP) and open platform architecture with user-defined communications and service-oriented architecture, which are the next big things in this space. In the professional services SI space, with vendors getting into end-to-end managed services business, FY 2005–06 will see multi-million, multi-year, total outsourcing contracts with matured service providers globally.

What are the plans for FY 2005–06?
To maintain our leadership in telecom services, we are building competencies in converged networks, open platforms, IMS, and security-related technologies. Our centers of excellence provide service innovation and are aligned to the technology trends forecasted by our customers. On the employee initiatives front, we have created a growth path wherein high caliber individuals become experts in specified technologies and domain areas. They will provide thought leadership to the customers on emerging technologies and help them crunch the time to market.
