TCS: Moving with the Money
TCS made it to the headlines with its IPO, but its real success lay in its expanding portfolio and clients
Monday, June 13, 2005

TCS' image as slow decision maker but aggressive in pricing has gone under a change with the listing of the company, as more transparency has come into its activities. TCS successfully completed its IPO and received an overwhelming response with 13 lakh bids. The issue got over-subscribed 7.7 times.

In FY 2004–05 the company registered total sales of Rs 9,748 crore of which telecom contributed Rs 1,595 crore. TCS, a tier 1 player of the country, accounts for about 44 percent of total software exports. It has benefited largely due to increasing offshore business and strong execution capabilities besides its size, depth of its skill pool, and client relationships.

TCS will deliver consulting services for BEA Solutions across regions on the latest releases of BEA products. This partnership is designed to help enable customers to deploy BEA products quickly, while helping to position TCS with its BEA practice.

On the corporate front, employee additions at TCS have been very strong in recent quarters with the company recruiting nearly 11,000 employees in FY2004–05. However, the company's employee utilization rates have declined in recent quarters while there was an increase in its attrition rates during the year stated.

Banking and financial services contributed nearly 38 percent to its total revenue in FY 2004–05 (down from 40 percent in FY 2003–04). In terms of technology-wise breakup, applications development and maintenance (ADM) accounted for 73 percent of its total revenue in FY 2004–05. During FY 2004–05, net profit expanded by 27.3 percent.

TCS' telecom practice is headquartered at Chennai in the Tidel Park center. The center hosts the ADM (application development and maintenance) and e-business service practices. It also provides business process outsourcing services. The center provides end-to-end solutions in the areas of OSS/BSS applications, enterprise applications, middleware solutions, open platforms, and mainframe platforms.

The center hosts the offshore development centers (ODC) of many important telecom service providers. Some of them are: AT&T Wireless-for various projects in areas like CRM, data warehousing, customer contact, etc and object-oriented analysis and design techniques; British Telecom-for various types of developments and systems integration and maintenance projects in application areas like billing, systems integration using mainframe, Internet technologies, and middleware technologies; Qwest for various applications under order management, billing, network provisioning, and service delivery on varied platforms; Verizon; New World Mobility; O2; and SKC.

Being a part of the Tata group, TCS is playing an important role in Tata's telecom initiatives. It provides solutions to VSNL to give substantial value-added services to clients. For the company, after banking and financial services and manufacturing, it is telecom practice that is the third largest contributor to TCS revenue.

With OEM and the carrier business increasing it is time for TCS to leverage on IP and convergence and make a mark in the international arena.
