V&D estimates

CyberMedia Research

In FY 2002–03, Data Access did exceptionally well and came out as the fastest growing company in the service provider space. The company clocked revenues of Rs 632 crore and a growth of around 1,217 percent. Although majority of its revenues came from ILD, the ISP business accounted for a small amount of Rs 48 crore.

In the ILD space, the company gave a good fight to established players like VSNL and integrated players like Bharti that have been in the service space for long. Data Access has become the No. 2 ILD player with a revenue share of nearly 11 percent. At present, the company is carrying over 30 percent of India"s ILD traffic.

At a time when most of the operators were planning to go for a traditional TDM technology, Data Access made a bold decision and opted for IP which helped the company make a giant leap and have economies of scale that other providers found difficult to match. The cheaper price is due to a network architecture that’s flexible and has a high level of redundancy.

During the fiscal under consideration, the company also focussed on global clearinghouse operations and has switches placed in India, the UK, the US, and Hong Kong. The company has already started a US link and other links would follow soon. As part of its efforts to spread the risk, it has opted for an external gateway operator in Sri Lanka and is vying for ILD operations in Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, and the UAE along with the local partner as and when the market opens up.

The company is aiming big and is looking at a turnover of Rs 3,000 crore in FY 2003–04, of which around Rs 2,000 crore will come from ILD operations while the rest will come from global clearinghouse, content, and BPO operations.
