In the fiscal 2002-03, Wipro did a total business in
communications worth Rs 901.5 crore. Though the company is consolidating its
position as a total communications solution player, it lost ground on both the
domestic front and the export front. Exports dropped to Rs 656 crore in FY
2002-03. One key reason for this was the ending of the $70 million project from
Lattice Group of the UK. Its major clients in the communications space last year
were Alcatel, Cisco, and Nortel.
On the domestic front too it lost some of its sheen. Wipro
Infotech’s networking business during the year was Rs 247 crore, a minimal
growth over the previous year. Though Wipro Infotech had several wins, loss of
the SBI order, which was one of the largest NI projects last year, to Datacraft,
saw it slipping for the first time from the position of the numero uno NI in the
country.
Apart from the NI business, Wipro has been going strong on
the network managed services and the network security services which are
estimated to have brought in around Rs 12 crore and Rs 21.5 crore respectively.
