V&D Estimates

Wireless infrastructure contributed in a major way to Motorola’s kitty, and took it to the No 4 position in the V&D100 "Top 10 Club" of equipment vendors. The company made major inroads in wireless infrastructure by bagging large orders both in CDMA as well as GSM. In radio infrastructure the company has around 32 percent share, as it is present in 22 out of 68 circles.

On the GSM front, the company bagged large orders from BSNL and Bharti. In BSNL, Motorola bagged a large GSM turnkey order for southern circles of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala, which was deployed in the last fiscal. It has also received an expansion order from BSNL for its southern circles. For Bharti, the company deployed GSM/GPRS networks in the circles of Maharashtra, Mumbai, and Gujarat. On the CDMA front, the company got an expansion and upgradation order from MTNL Delhi for CDMA 2000 1X. In the last quarter of the fiscal, Motorola bagged a 2 lakh line CDMA order from Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra).

Due to its large footprint, Motorola has also got a good expansion order for radios. In the GSM handsets, Motorola is placed at number three slot and is trying to improve its market share as well as branding by introducing newer models. The company was late in introducing CDMA handset in the Indian market. Recently, it has tied up with Tata Teleservices for color CDMA handsets, and is also in active discussion with Reliance Infocomm.

To move at a fast pace and provide end to end solutions, Motorola bought over Winphoria, a CDMA softswitch vendor.

Being a leader in the radio handsets market, the company bagged a large deal from Polnet (Police network).

Plans are to set up an R&D facility in Bangalore with an investment of US $13 million. The facility will be ready in this fiscal.
