SM has been the forte for Ericsson, the No. 3 equipment vendor with a revenue of Rs 1,450.30 crore in 2002-03. In GSM infrastructure, the company is presently the numero uno in both switches and radios. In switch, Ericsson has a market share of around 53 percent as the company has deployed switches in 36 out of 68 operational networks. On the other hand in the radio segment the company has 41 percent market share as the number of radio deployments is in 28 circles. Ericsson’s success can actually be attributed to the deals it was able to secure from state giant BSNL, private telecom leader Bharti, and mobile operator Hutch. These orders were actually bagged in FY 2001-02 but a majority of the network deployment took place in FY 2002-03.

With BSNL, Ericsson won the highest value deal in FY 2002-03 and helped the company in further consolidating its market share both in switch and radio. Because of the large customer base, the company receives lot of repeat orders.

Ericsson also bagged the six city pilot project for BSNL’s VoIP implementation. The project covers Kolkata, Bangalore, New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Chennai, and Pune. On the handset front (Sony Ericsson), the company did not perform too well as it was busy chalking out the strategies. To develop and test mobile Internet applications in India, the company has formed Ericsson Mobility World and has presently around 3,000 partners.
