Lucent Technologies scripted one of the most amazing success
stories in FY 2002-03. In fiscal 2001-02, it clocked a revenue of Rs 750 crore
but narrowly missed the Top 10 club in V&D100. Last year, however it grew
nearly three-fold to touch Rs 2,015 crore, thanks mainly to two orders of
massive scale from Reliance Infocomm and BSNL.
Lucent signed a very large contract with Reliance to deploy 5
million wireless network based on CDMA. The network is designed for voice and
high-speed data services for its 17 circles.
Lucent also bagged the prestigious BSNL project in the West
zone, which comprises Maharashtra, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh in conjunction
with ITI. Over the last 12 months, Lucent added a million lines to the BSNL
network, doubling the embedded base achieved over the previous five years. BSNL,
recently deployed Lucent’s network management system to monitor more than 100
locations across three of the four zones in the country.

Lucent is also providing Tata Teleservices with Flexent base
stations (which supports 3G CDMA2000.1X service), mobile switching centers and
other network infrastructure. In effect, Lucent is servicing all the major
private service providers in the country except the Bharti group.
As part of its restructuring exercise, Lucent inked a GSM
outsourcing deal with Hughes Software Systems. This in effect signified Lucent’s
exit from software development in the third generation GSM. Even internally,
Lucent underwent a lot of restructuring with Vincent Mazzola taking over as the
head honcho replacing Vijay Gupta. The company also shifted its corporate office
from Gurgaon to Mumbai during the year.
