Top Five Telecom Groups
Well, what is depicted here is not the real picture—did you say?
Wednesday, July 18, 2001

You are right. The government is still the biggest group as far as telecom business in India is concerned. But we feel the government’s real business is not business. So we decided to exclude the government.

While Reliance Vs Bharti is the favorite media obsession, the top two groups are neither of the two. HFCL, with its mammoth business with BSNL, is on top. On the second spot is the first name in the Indian business—the Tatas. Actions do speak louder than words, for this silent performer. Bharti does come in at No. 3, but closely following it is the cellular czar—Hutchison. BPL, even without the figures for BPL Telecom, manages to make it to the fifth position. The next two groups in our list were Hughes with Rs 477 crore and BK Modi with Rs 461 crore. Hughes’ India story is interesting. All the three Indian operations of the satellite and communications technology company are into services—two into communication services and one into software.

Will the Top Five Groups look different next year? We believe they will. Though slightly. And may be in 2002-03, drastically. But then, who knows. Any company that buys a stake in VSNL or possibly MTNL could well shoot to No. 1 position next year itself.

Yes, who knows?
