BSNL Upsets the Cart, Two New Entrants
There were quite a few obvious changes in the Top 10 bracket of V&D 100
this year. While BSNL made an entry as the top company for the first time, Cisco
became the second multinational vendor after Lucent to secure a place among the
top rankers. BSNL was placed there not because of any extraordinary performance
during the last year, but owing to its transformation as a corporate entity. In
the previous years of V&D 100, BSNL was not considered for the rankings
because of the fact that it was not a corporate body but just an arm of DoT. It
was bifurcated into the Department of Telecom Services and the Department of
Telecom Operations, a couple of years back.
The total turnover of the top ten companies in the FY 2000-01 was Rs
43,823.81 crore. In the previous year, the top ten companies accounted for a
turnover of Rs 21,146. This almost doubling of the revenue of the top companies,
was due to the entry of BSNL, which alone accounted for a turnover of Rs 23,034
crore.
Cisco Systems India and Hindustan Cables were the new entrants to the Top 10
Club this year. While Hindustan Cables was at the seventh place with a turnover
of Rs 974 crore, Cisco, with a turnover of Rs 765 crore, was number ten.
