Last fiscal saw Oasis Cellular’s transformation from a loss-making to
profit-making brand. It became the first cellular company in the circle to
actually make profit after tax. It posted a net profit of 1.45 crore with total
subscribers going up to 47547-a growth of 138 percent during the last financial
year. The turnover for the last fiscal stood at Rs 64.5 crore. The company has
the benefit of low capital and operational cost coupled with low debt, due to
its utilization of Shyam Telelinks’ backbone. The projected subscriber base is
Rs 1 lakh by March 2002. It plans to use satellite telephony in Rajasthan
villages. The company’s average revenue per user is about Rs 1400 per month.
Oasis Cellular, which operates in Rajasthan, is a brand of Hexacom India Ltd.
Hexacom is a consortium of Telecom majors including Shyam Telecom Limited (STL),
TCIL and Telesystems International Wireless, Canada. It operates across 16
cities of Rajasthan. STL is the licensee to provide basic telecom services in
Rajasthan under the brand name "Rainbow." The principle foreign
partner in the consortium, TIW is the international arm of Telesystem Limited,
Canada’s largest telecom organisation in the private sector. Oasis has spent
Rs 25 crores towards interconnect lines in Kota, Ajmer, Jodhpur, and Udaipur,
installation of BTS towers and expansion of switch capacity. Oasis also launched
the SMS service last year and plans to introduce WAP services next fiscal year.
