Kolkata-based Usha Beltron is an engineering and technology corporation manufacturing jelly-filled telephone cables, steel, wire and wire ropes. Its cable division is one of the largest telecom cable manufacturers with an annual capacity of 55 lckm to 65 lckm. The fifth largest manufacturer of wire ropes in the world, the company has distribution centers spread across India, Europe, Africa and USA. This year, the company achieved beyond its projected target of Rs 850 crore. Telecom cables contributed Rs 216 crore.

One of the biggest initiatives taken by the company was to commission a 20,000 rkm-capacity optic fiber plant at Silvassa in March 2001. Last year, the company supplied BSNL with cables 32 lckm capacity worth 230 crore that constituted 8 percent of BSNL entire cable requirements. This year the company is expecting a revision of their contract with BSNL for supplying 42 lckm capacity cables worth Rs.290 crore. New investment plans include expansion of the steel plant for which Rs 80 crore have been earmarked and the setting up of a cable unit of Rs 2 crore. For the coming year, the company has outlined delivery of optical fibers to companies like Reliance, Bharti, HFCL, Hughes and Tatatel. It is expecting a turnover of Rs 400 crore on cables and 50 crores on optical fibres for the period 2001-2002. The market share in India for its cables division is 10 percent and will remain so for the next year.
