What is the potential of 3G for Oracle?
We have a solution for a centralized service exposure platform known as the Oracle Communications Services Gatekeeper. This is a comprehensive service exposure platform providing a powerful policy enforcement engine, a converged web-telecom service exposure layer, a highly scalable and automated partner relationship management module, a wide range of reusable value added service enablers, and a network abstraction layer which bridges the world of legacy intelligent networks with next generation IMS networks. Apart from SDP, a holistic 3G approach should also include billing and service fulfillment, as telcos need to activate subscribers fast on 3G, and be able to charge/bundle converged services and rich media services.

What are the growth drivers for your business in the country?
In the current scenario, investing in a comprehensive and open standards based IT infrastructure is crucial for supporting network and services, and this is the growth driver for Oracle's communications business in India. To reduce investment and time to market for next generation services, the CSPs are deploying carrier grade and open standard solutions which will provide them with a horizontal service delivery platform to monetize their new offerings. Telco providers are also going into DTH and IPTV services, as they realize the importance of providing quadruple play to help drive ARPU and total customer satisfaction.

What are the major challenges in the Indian market?
The key challenge is that while CSPs realize the need for adoption of new age technology offerings, the declining profit margins of CSPs has made them increasingly apprehensive about investing in IT solutions.

How can operators upgrade their tech platform from 2G to 3G?
Leading CSPs recognize the need to adopt a service oriented architecture (SOA) framework to accelerate the creation and delivery of next generation services in a scenario where they have to upgrade their technology platform from 2G to 3G. SOA replaces traditional monolithic systems with common reusable application functions that can be used across multiple services, enabling CSPs to bring a new service to the market within a short period.

What are your focus areas to increase market share?
We are focusing on managing the systems and infrastructure (BSS/OSS) of Indian telecom operators by partnering with India based SIs. The global communications market for software and services is worth $42 bn. Media, content, and advertising play a vital role in this space.
