Comverse is very active in India. How do you find the market?
Comverse started in India in 2000. The kind of competition that is present in the Indian telecom space makes it an exclusive geography for all the telecom stakeholders. The present market is very innovative with huge opportunity to grow in all spheres. Without doubt, India has the fiercest competition with almost thirteen operators, making it a very competitive market. Another contributing factor is that the masses, in general, are very techno- savvy, and that's the reason operators try to bring updated technology which acts as an icing on the cake in the Indian telecom industry. The country's USP is also that it produces the best telecom engineers in the world.

Do you think there would be major changes in the billing system of Comverse ONE in the aftermath of 3G?
Our billing services run on 2G and 3G as well. As such, there would be no substantial changes in the billing system because of 3G applications. The structural and infrastructural systems will remain unaltered. We have been deploying 3G technology and its applications all over the world, so in India we will come up with something that is already tried and tested.

What is the new buzz, according to you, on the enterprise side?
In the telecom front, the changes that I have noticed is that initially operators would go for solutions with small vendors, but now they go for global brands as they now look for solutions that are saleable as well as reliable. Two and a half minute is the time that an operator can afford to go downtime in a year, so you can imagine the kind of back-end support that is needed. A high solution adaptability is the demand of enterprises in the current scenario. A very high support, and upgradation are required by the service providers. The research and development spending over the years has become more focused. The enterprises want to know the entire roadmap before venturing in any deal.

What are the future plans of Comverse in the VAS arena?
On the VAS side, our focus is mainly on the SMS based services. Besides, Comverse specializes in providing this facility of Mobile Centrex which is a virtual PABX facilitating business houses in having an internal communication within the organization, even on mobile phones. Today, mobile Internet users are three times as compared to the broadband users, and they are expected to grow manifold in the upcoming years. We are also going to introduce innovative services in this arena.
