Can you tell us something about HanDIL? How is it different from other
products in the same space?
HanDIL provides a systematic and disciplined approach to developing applications
for mobile handsets, focusing on a holistic view of mobile application
development.
This approach facilitates development of applications that are largely
device-independent, provide a similar look-and-feel across a variety of
handsets, and support several international languages while leveraging the
device capabilities related to form-factor, screen-size, memory, and battery
power.
In this approach, the features and functionalities that are common to typical
mobile applications (network connectivity, UI components, event handling, etc)
are developed as reusable components. Toward this end, Persistent Systems has
defined and developed a device abstraction layer (DAL).
The mobile application is developed on top of DAL, thereby shielding the
mobile application from the intricacies and specificities of various mobile
handsets. Handset- or platform-specific capabilities are leveraged through a
small “device-specific” reusable code base that can be developed for each
handset/platform independently.
In addition to DAL, the HanDIL framework also provides a systematic way of
capturing and propagating system and user events, identifying the UI widgets as
well as the control flow of any application, thereby bringing in a consistent
methodology to mobile application development.
Who is the target segment for this application?
The HanDIL framework allows mobile application developers realize a quick
turn-around, reduce time to market, optimize costs with greater predictability,
and enables them to evolve a better strategy for the product. It facilitates
mobile carriers to push a fully configured and customized application to the
mobile handset.
HanDIL is a multi-faceted approach to mobile application development that
takes into consideration portability, usability, and performance, thereby
averting the need to re-architect applications frequently. Such an approach is
critical because any missing dimension from this approach results in a
non-optimal application that limits its portability, usability, and widespread
adoptability.

From a business perspective, the target segment is anyone and everyone who
intends to mobilize existing solutions or develop new application from scratch,
which needs to supported across several handsets running diff OS/Platforms.
What is your market share in this segment? How do you compare yourself
with other players in this segment?
Mobile application development and testing is one of the key growth areas
today. The market is as large as the number of mobile phone users, which is over
3 bn mobile worldwide, with India contributing over 200 mn users.
