State-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam and private telecom giant Bharti Airtel have bagged Voice&Data SAARC Telecom Growth Engine awards based on their subscriber growth in Internet and mobile services during the last fiscal, respectively, in India.
Awards were given away to operators in Saarc countries by Bangladesh Minister of Posts & Telecommunications Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju at the 8th Saarc CEO Conclave organised by Voice&Data, a leading magazine in India that traces the business, technology and regulatory aspect of telecom and networking, at Dhaka on October 30.
JK Roy, executive director, BSNL and Syed Safawi, executive director, Bharti Airtel picked the coveted trophies for their companies. The winners were identified based on the number of subscribers added in mobile and Internet segment in the last financial year.
For Afghanistan award was given only in the mobile services category to Roshan.
In Bangladesh, awards for both the categories went to Grameenphone. Raihan Shamsi Ahmed, acting CEO, Grameenphone, received the award.
Thinley Dorji, CEO, Bhutan Telecom collected the prize for the company in both the segments in Bhutan.
Pakistan Telecommunications Company won the prize for Internet services, while the award for mobile services went to Telenor's kitty.
Nepal's incumbent Nepal Telecom was a clear winner in both the categories. In Maldives, Dhiraagu lapped up both the awards. Sri Lanka Telecom got award for adding the highest number of Internet subscribers in the country during the last fiscal. Dialog Telekom added the maximum mobile subscribers.
The conclave, a discussion forum for operators in Saarc region saw more than 100 top brasses of the telecom industry come together at the Bangladeshi capital and deliberate on the concerns of the industry in the region.
Bangladesh Minister of Posts & Telecommunications Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju, who was the chief guest, said, “The conclave is taking place at a very significant time when the present government has emphasised on the telecommunication and ICT sector for the development of the country. The government has a vision of 'Digital Bangladesh' by 2021. The ministry is also considering the adoption of a new National Telecommunications Policy.”
