COAI, in its pre-budget submission has sought benefit of nil duty on import of optical fibre cable (OFC) for use in telecom sector and tax reliefs for independent Infrastructure Providers (IP-1s).

TV Ramachandran, Director General, COAI stated that OFC is the backbone for providing telecom and broadband services to millions of customers and exemption from duty on OFC will enable expansion of affordable service, especially to the rural and far-flung areas which are yet to be covered.

He pointed out that the customs administrations in most countries are charging 'NIL' rate of customs duty on the import of OFC.

COAI has also sought tax reliefs for Independent Infrastructure Providers (IP-1s) so as to enable growth and sharing of infrastructure, which is in the interest of the consumers, the country and the industry.
