Nepal Telecom Selects ZTE
Nepal Telecom has awarded ZTE a project that will help the telecom company to add 3.5 mn lines to reach total GSM mobile capacity of 5 mn lines within next three years. The project, which is the biggest ever embarked by NT, includes installation of new networks for GSM mobile phones services as well as 3G cellular networks based on W-CDMA protocol. The project is expected to start in the next three to four months.

SLT Signs-up with Ericsson
Sri Lanka Telecom has announced that its moving toward next generation architecture through an integrated infrastructure facilitating SLT's Global business and new converged services. SLT signed an agreement with Ericsson to migrate its international switching system to an IP-based switching platform. Ericsson will deliver, implement, and integrate Telephony Soft-switch and Media Gateways for Sri Lanka Telecom.

ITS Launches Operation of WARID
International Turnkey Systems (ITS) has successfully completed the setup and operation of the Telecom systems for Warid Telecom, Bangladesh. As per the signed agreement, ITS provided its integrated telecommunication solution TABS, which includes solutions specifically for billing, customer care, call center, e-business, and ERP. The implemented solutions supports Warid Telecom in providing prompt services in the field of mobile communications on an international level.

Ericsson, Samsung Sign Deal
Under the terms of the worldwide royalty bearing agreement, Ericsson has granted Samsung a non-exclusive license under Ericsson's patent portfolio for the 2G and 3G mobile telephony standards to develop, manufacture, and sell 2G and 3G subscriber and infrastructure equipment. In return, Samsung provides a royalty payment and a reciprocal license under Samsung's valuable patent portfolio to Ericsson. The parties have further agreed to dismiss all pending patent infringement lawsuits between the parties.

Ericsson Wins Order in Bangladesh
Ericsson has won an order to supply and install network radio equipment in Bangladesh. The order is from the Bangladesh subsidiary of Orascom Telecom Holdings, Banglalink. It includes base stations and base station controllers for the network in the capital city, Dhaka, and the surrounding area. Ericsson did not give any financial details of the deal. And, Ericsson EDA technology has been selected by Broad Band Telecom Services (BBTS) a leading Internet service provider in Chittagong, Bangladesh.

SingTel Partners with Warid
SingTel and Warid Telecom have entered into a definitive agreement subsequent to which SingTel will acquire a 30% equity stake in Warid Telecom for an estimated $758 mn, valuing the company at an enterprise value of $2.9 bn. The investment is being made as part of a strategy to support Warid Telecom's continued growth and enhance its market position. The purchase will be funded through SingTel's internal and/or external sources of funds.

Thomson, Nokia Siemens to Tie-up
Thomson and Nokia Siemens have announced their collaboration in developing a pioneering 3G Femto cell home access solution. Femto cells are small cellular access points, which provide enhanced coverage specifically in residential environments and enable operators to provide fixed-mobile convergence services and others such as IPTV. Thomson's Femto cell-enabled residential gateway coupled with the 3G Femto Home Access network solution from Nokia Siemens Networks will allow operators to seamlessly deliver compelling 3G multimedia services.

First Afghan Telemedicine Project
Roshan, the leading telecom operator in Afghanistan, has launched a first Telemedicine solution in Afghanistan. Using broadband technology, wireless video consultation and digital image transfer, the telemedicine project will provide hospitals in Afghanistan with real-time access to specialist diagnosis, treatment, and training expertise from abroad. Roshan has teamed up with Cisco, Aga Khan University Hospital, French Medical Institute for Children.

QUALCOMM and Siano Agreement
QUALCOMM and Siano Mobile Silicon, a leading supplier of semiconductor solutions for mobile digital TV (MDTV), have signed a royalty-free agreement that enables Siano to use QUALCOMM's patented technologies to design, manufacture and sell certain semiconductor chip products that implement FLO technology. This license agreement paves the way for Siano to develop a multi-standard MDTV receiver chip supporting FLO, in addition to other standards.

Motorola Q2 Result
Motorola has reported sales of $8.7 bn for the Q2, 2007. The GAAP net loss from continuing operations for the quarter was $0.02 per share, which includes net charges of $0.04 per share related to workforce reductions and an insurance litigation matter. Mobile Devices segment sales were $4.3 bn, down 40% compared with the year-ago quarter. Excluding highlighted items, the segment incurred an operating loss of $264 mn, compared with operating earnings of $804 mn in the year-ago quarter.
