In a bid to go all out to curb the falling revenues, and yet simultaneously offer subscribers competitive schemes, TTSL and RCOM have launched 'push email' services, using which subscribers can access their email via SMS service. It is handset agnostic, and therefore reaches out to a wider consumer base, being lighter on the pocket as well.

Expected to spur the growth and adoption of mobile email usage using the SMS platform, TTSL offers thTis personalized email service to all its Tata Indicom and Tata DOCOMO customers who will be able to check, receive and forward emails of up to three accounts simultaneously.

Speaking at the launch of this service, Zubin Dubash, AVP, VAS, new products development, TTSL said, “Customers will now no longer have to worry whether their handsets are GPRS/BREW enabled or not, since Push 4 All Mail is an ubiquitous service that will provide hassle-free, easy to use email service on SMS. Today consumer preferences are changing dramatically. As a telecom operator, it's important to listen to a consumer's voice and offer services that make a meaningful impact, both in terms of service and revenues.”

TTSL has tied up with iseemedia-a leading Canadian provider of low cost wireless email services to operators in the country-to offer this service.

Following closely on TTSL's heels, RCOM also launched a similar service in association with iseemedia. Accordingly, RCOM GSM and CDMA customers can receive all their desktop emails via SMS using the new push email service.

Called 'iseemail', iseemedia's multi-platform email solution will enable every mobile handset in India to act as a smartphone and provide RCOM customers the facility to check, download and retrieve email messages using the SMS interface. 'iseemail' supports all types of email messaging systems in India through standard POP3 & IMAP4. RCOM is offering iseemedia's email service on its prepaid as well as postpaid platforms as a subscription service, of which iseemedia receives a percentage of revenue from every user transaction.

With India's total number of mobile phone subscribers estimated at over 125 mn, a major part being in the rural segment, such data services can be very helpful in boosting the operators' revenues. The main challenge for them is to deliver more sophisticated services using the existing handsets that don't have access to the Internet. Thus, the latest push email services come as a step in the right direction.
