The war of words (read Voice) has finally moved to war of text (read SMS). Reliance Communication today announced one paisa SMS plan which will take the telecom industry tariff war to Text messages.

Now a Reliance subscriber, both CDMA and GSM, can send SMS anywhere in the country by paying just 1 paise/sms. Reliance is also offering unlimited SMS plan at Re 1/day.

“SMS continues to grow every year with more and more innovative ways of utilizing its potential coming in the forefront. Indians are using SMS as a mode of communication to keep in touch with friends and family. With select subscriber groups, SMS is a preferred communication mode over voice calls. On account of significant tariff disparity in the recent months, it has lost its due share of attention. Considering this, Reliance Communications with its first initiative, aims to revitalize SMS usage in the country," says Mahesh Prasad, president of Reliance Communications.

Reliance communication, second largest mobile operator in country with 92mn subscriber, has so far been banking on its aggressive pricing in the price conscious telecom market.

Recently, Tata group owned Tata Docomo has hogged and lime light and subscribers from competitors with its aggressive pricing strategy. The company has introduced not only billing per second, which is one of its own kind initiatives in the word, but also Diet SMS, where one has to pay per character.

Both the players-Reliance communication and Tata DoCoMo operate in both GSM and CDMA space.

The initiative will burn a hole in the pocket of Reliance Communication. Reliance Communications stocks were down 1.54% at Rs 166.30 in the afternoon trade on the BSE.

Trai has been telling the operators to reduce the SMS tariffs since the price of sending an SMS is just 4-5 paise.
