Market Information
The hubs are gradually being phased out of the Indian market with switches
replacing them. 10/100 Mbps hubs have already been phased out and now sell only
in select channels like tenders based on older specifications. The reason for
hubs dying in India is primarily the price difference between hubs and 10/100
unmanaged switches which is narrowing down. Moreover, the increased throughput
needs are also making hubs disappear. The main reason for this is that users
have large files to share and a hub takes time because its bandwidth is shared
between all PCs connected to it. A switch, on the other hand, gives a dedicated
bandwidth of 10/100 Mbps to all PCs connected to it. The total hubs market size
was pegged at Rs 38 crore this year with D-Link enjoying the lion’s share of
65 percent. Allied Telesyn and Dax were the only other frontline players still
selling hubs.
