Hubs are generally categorized into three types—chassis hubs, stackable
and unmanaged or dumb hubs. Chassis hubs support up to several hundred user
connections and fault-tolerant components such as redundant power supplies,
cooling fans, and hot-swappable cards. These devices are generally deployed in
wiring closets as floor distribution hubs or in data centers as backbone hubs.
Stackable hubs are meant for the workgroup environment. They support fewer
than 50 users per hub. And as the name implies, these hubs can be placed one on
top of the other to form a stack of up to eight hubs.
Unmanaged hubs represent the third category of hubs that are meant to sell in
very small networks (up to 12 nodes or so).
These hubs do not have a management agent that can talk to the network
management station.
