Venkatesh Koravadi, director (business operations), Asia Technology Center, CommWorks Corporation, was recently in India to scout for people and do some groundwork for the Asia Technology Center that his company is setting up in Bangalore. The center will be the company’s first in Asia and the second after Chicago. Koravadi spoke to VOICE&DATA on the opportunities the centre will offer to Indian professionals. Excerpts:

Venkatesh Koravadi, director (business operations), Asia Technology Center, CommWorks Corporation

What is the objective behind the technology centre being set up at Bangalore? How big is it going to be?
Establishing a technology center in Asia is a strategic move for CommWorks. Asia continues to be a high-growth market for all our product lines. As a regional technology hub of CommWorks, the Bangalore center will be the primary interface during product development and support between the US and our regional customers and partners. It will enhance the ability of CommWorks’ professional services team to collaborate with customers throughout the Asia-Pacific region. With closer proximity to customers and partners across the region, we can more rapidly address design and customization issues that are unique to service providers in Asia.

What kind of functions will the center perform?
Initially it will focus on wireless product development work. The next phase will see the addition of professional services team, which will be working with customers throughout Asia.

What domain skills are you looking at for the centre? How many professionals do you plan to hire in the near future?
For the product development group, we are looking for experienced engineers and managers in wireless, network management and system test areas. For the professional services group, we are looking for escalation engineers and managers who can work with our customers throughout Asia. Initially the center will hire 30–40 engineers but will rapidly go up to 100 engineers.

What career opportunities will exist for professionals?
Employees will have the opportunity to work on access infrastructures and IP service platforms, in state-of-the-art laboratories. Other opportunities include training in the US, and job rotation across R&D centers worldwide.
