Today the heartbeat of any telecom service provider is in its data center. As
telcos are rapidly expanding operations, data centers have become more strategic
for them than ever before, for improving productivity, enhancing business
processes, and accelerating change.
However, challenges for telcos are unlimited when it comes to managing their
data centers. The number of wireless subscribers has touched 456.74 mn by the
end of August 2009, and still counting. As a result, data centers are the
strategic focus of telcos' efforts to protect, optimize and grow business.
VOICE&DATA, in its continues effort to address the issues of telecom industry,
organized a two-day event, titled 'Data Center-Telcos' New Lifeline' in Goa on
September 4 and 5, 2009. The event was attended by the CIOs and CTOs of leading
telecom service providers of the country.
The aim of the event was to the make the participants understand the need for
architecture based data center design, deploying and migrating data center by
implementing technologies like virtualization, storage management, etc. The
two-day event addressed various questions looming large in front of CIOs and
CTOs, such as how can data centers keep pace with the growth of customers and
partners in the midst of technology advancements and deployment, and how to
enhance business by deploying data centers and create new revenue streams.

Next Generation Data Centers for Service Providers' |
The participants were also told about how data centers could be useful for a
telco to expand its reach to greenfield operators and other service providers.
Role of technologies like-structured cabling, networking, power management,
storage, and application management software-in effective functioning of data
center were discussed. International trends in data center deployment were also
discussed in the event.
The keynote address was delivered by PJ Nath, president, Sify Technologies.
The discussions mainly revolved around building next generation data centers for
service providers. All participants agreed that IT operations are today a
crucial aspect of most telecom operations. One of the main concerns is business
continuity, as companies rely on their information systems to run their
operations.

Though data centers play a leading role in the business of telcos and their
IT heads are ready to look at newer technologies, Indian service providers need
more awareness about cloud computing, cost-effective ways to set up data
centers.
