Birla Tyres, India's fifth largest tyre maker, set up a production facility in Balasore, Orissa, using state-of-the-art machines by the world famous company Pirelli of Italy. Birla Tyres boasts of an annual production capacity of 1.5 mn tyres, including tyres for passenger cars, light commercial radials, buses, trucks and agricultural vehicles. Its products are also exported to forty-four countries.

Recently Birla Tyres set up a Rs 17,000 mn greenfield tyre factory at Laksar (Haridwar) in Uttarakhand. The unit started its operation by producing 257 metric tonnes a day. Once all projects go full steam, by 2009-end, the tyre manufacturer would be producing 500 tonnes of tyre per day.

“We have got stupendous support for the project form the Digi-Link local team and the SI from scratch till running flawless structured cabling solution”

PK Sushanth, deputy general manager & CIO, Birla Tyres

Challenges
For its new structured cabling system infrastructure, Birla Tyres required more than a standards compliant cabling solution. A high performance, tried, tested and reliable product was required to save capex and ensure RoI. The focused requirement was to comply to stringent industrial safety norms as well as environment safety rules as per the recommendations of international agencies. Digi-Link was able to exceed all these requirements as a whole with added benefit of local sales and services support from the manufacturer and Digi-Link certified system integrator.

Birla Tyres required an active network equipment at its' existing facility at Balasore and greenfield facility at Laksar, and demanded an integration of both the cabling infrastructure. Saving cost, space, and implementation time was a huge responsibility for the existing and greenfield projects. The performance of cabling system should not be compromised while achieving safety standards, and a smooth MACs (move, add and changes) as and when required. Thorough consultation and precise strategies were required before choosing the right solution to future-proof their ICT highway.

Choices
Digi-LinkP350 Cat6 and Optilink PU Singlemode structured cabling solution was the preferred choice. A reputation for high quality products and lower costs of installation weighed in favor of choosing Digilink's structured cabling solutions. P350 Cat6 provides punch down modular solution. The same style of jack can be used for both the panel and wall outlet to double the recommended channel performance. Optilink PU Singlemode provides industry-best Corning's SMF28e at the OptilinkPU core. The Digi-Linkcabling system provides versatile applications requirement of data, voice, and video with unparalleled bandwidth requirement even for 10G applications, making the entire system a future ready ICT highway.

The complete structured cabling infrastructure from Digi-Link is certified for international industrial safety norms of UL (Underwriters Laboratories). Digi-Link's solutions helped Birla Tyres comply with to stringent fire and safety norms without compromising on added performance. Digi-Link entire sheathing materials for copper and fiber cabling components are fire retardant plastics as per the recommendation of international industrial safety agencies compliance norms. Keeping ISO 14000 norms of Birla Tyre in mind, Digi-Link fulfilled its commitments to environment safety by providing the entire structured cabling components manufactured in compliance with RoHS (restriction of hazardous substances) norms and regulation.

Since Birla Tyres selected Digi-Link as its partner the former was able to achieve direct cost savings by reducing the overall average length of the horizontal copper and fiber cable run.

The system integrator, NetIndia Services utilized the tried and tested P350 Cat6 and Optilink PU structured cabling solutions to ensure performance and reliability while saving cost. Apart from these performance, reliability, and budget criteria, ease-of-installation was another important factor for choosing the Digi-Linkbrand. A full 20-year performance warranty was also provided.
