In sync with the trend of convergence taking place in the Indian telecom
sector, Convergence India 2009 aims to connect players from different segments
in the telecom industry on one common platform. The number of exhibitors in
India Telecom 2009 dropped from 170 in the previous year to 137, Exhibition
India, the organizer of this event is claiming to have registered a growth of
20% over the previous year. As of now, organizers are claiming that over 600
exhibitors from 30 countries have confirmed their participation. These
exhibitors are from the broadcasting, IT, information security, telecom and
mobility segments.
Supporting Organizations
The 17th Convergence India 2009 is supported by the Ministry of
Communications & Information Technology, and the Ministry of Information &
Broadcasting along with a host of associations like the Asia Pacific Satellite
Communication Council (APSCC), Cable Operators Federation of India (COFI),
Consumer Electronics and Appliances Manufacturers Association (CEAMA), the
Indian Cellular Association (ICA), the IPTV India Forum and the Manufacturers
Association of Information Technology (MAIT), MPEG Industry Forum and WiFi
Alliance.

Focus on Broadcasting
Last year two telecom players, Reliance Communications and Bharti Airtel,
entered the broadcast segment with DTH service. Tata Group, in collaboration
with Star, is already present in the domain under the brand name of Tata Sky. A
lot of eyes are on the development of IPTV and mobile TV. MTNL has taken a lead
in the IPTV segment.
“The broadcasting industry is expected to grow from the current $8 bn to $18
bn by 2010. Increasingly, radio and television content are converging on telecom
networks, while new technologies are providing telephony, Internet access and TV
channels on broadband networks,” says Bunny Sidhu, vice-president, Exhibitions
India.
No wonder Convergence India 2009 is putting a strong focus on broadcasting as
a major value-addition to the ICT industry. While broadcasting has previously
been an integral part of Convergence India, the 17th edition of the event will
showcase the rise of the sector on a scale larger than ever before as broadcast
and satellite equipment manufacturers, VAS players, broadcasters, service
providers, network operators etc, all gather under one roof.
At this event, services related to broadcast sector will be displayed at a
separate hall in Pragati Maidan in Delhi. The strategic choice of Delhi for this
event has added value. Delhi is the first Indian city with 100% mobile
penetration.
Going by the footfall in previous similar events, organizers are expecting to
attract 20,000 trade visitors from various diaspora which will include industry
professionals, government officials, trade associations, regulatory bodies and
media.
