Sriperumbudur is fast emerging as India's own Shenzen with
ever increasing number of companies setting up their manufacturing unit here.
The latest entrant to Chennai is Flextronics whose industrial park was
inaugurated recently by the prime minister, Manmohan Singh. The park thus
becomes the third operation of the company after Bangalore and Pondicherry. The
park will provide vertically integrated services including design, plastic
injection moulding, printed circuit board assembly, mechanicals and enclosure
integration, and distribution and repair services. The Chennai facility will
support manufacturing requirements of local and global OEM customers.
Flextronics has committed $100 mn for its manufacturing operations in India.
Inaugurating the event, prime minister, Manmohan Singh said,
"I am confident that investment of this magnitude will create an industrial
ecosystem conducive to accelerated growth in this area. This growth will create
employment opportunities." Michael McNamara, CEO, Flextronics, addressing
the media before the launch of the facility said, "Over the course of six
years, we have become preeminent EMS provider in the burgeoning India market. We
selected Chennai as the location for this industrial park because of the
technical talent, efficient logistics infrastructure, and cost effective
operations, as well as the support and encouragement of government of India and
Tamil Nadu."

operational excellence." Flextronics also operates Industrial parks in
Brazil, China, Hungary, Mexico, and Poland.
According to Dayanidhi Maran, the minister for Communications
and IT, "The communication landscape in the country has undergone a total
transformation. The galloping domestic demand for mobile handsets showed us the
way to attract global players to come closer to the consumers." A Gururaj,
the India head of Flextronics also spoke and thanked the government of Tamil
Nadu for the local support in setting up the unit. The Chennai has been modelled
on its Doumen Park in China, which has more than 3.1 mn sq ft of manufacturing
space in about 150 acres.
