Post independence, building India's telecom backbone was one of the prestigious tasks that Devendra Kumar Sangal and others took up. Sangal, an expert in Switching Branch, was involved in the modernization of Switching Network. During the watershed period of 1950-1990, various types of Electronic Switching Systems were installed in the Network. These systems included C-DOT, E-10B, NEAX-64 etc. The latest system ie Optical Fiber System was also introduced during his period. In 2000, then Minister of State for Communications, Shri Tapan Sikdar, honored Sangal for his role in building the stepping stones of the backbone of today's telecom network in India.
