Kumar Malavalli is widely considered to be the visionary
behind Fiber Channel storage fabrics, a technology that enabled the development
of production-class SANs and a multi-billion dollar market segment. Kumar holds
several patents in fibre channel including zoning for SANs.
Mysore born, Malavalli chairs the ANSI Fiber Channel Switch
Committee and the FC Association Technology Committee; organizations that have
helped shape standards in this area.
In India he was involved with Digital Equalizer Program, aimed at narrowing
the gap between the urban and rural areas by enhancing education through
computers. Before co-founding InMage, Malavalli co-founded Brocade
Communications, a leading provider of SAN infrastructure. In 2003, the Silicon
Valley Engineering Council inducted Malavalli into its Hall of Fame. He also
received the prestigious INCITS award in recognition of his critical role in
developing 17 standards in the SAN industry. He has established the Kumar
Malavalli Endowed Chair in Storage Systems Research at UC Santa Cruz.
