Dewang Mehta took charge of Nasscom in 1991 on a part time basis but it soon turned into his most successful and fulfilling project. From 1991 to 2001, both Mehta and Nasscom grew to new heights, drawing sustenance from each other. Dewang Mehta championed the dream of making India an IT super power and Nasscom became the key voice of the Indian software and services segment.

Mehta's intensive efforts with the government and IT related departments such as the DoE, the DoT, the VSNL, and Ministry of Information Technology, enabled him to wrest concessions such as zero duty exports, tax concessions, etc, for the software industry.

He played a significant role in formulating stringent Copyright Laws. He also helped around 19 state Governments draft their IT policies. He put the Indian software industry on the global map by launching India Inc.
