Much before the more famous Indian telecom reforms of the 90s started, private companies were allowed to manufacture selected telecom equipment. Ratan Tata of Tata Group, decided to tap the opportunity and he hired a young manager called Vijay K Gupta-a person with a very strong customer orientation.

Gupta not only built a company to manufacture telephone instruments, transmission equipment and small switching equipment, but also created an organization which became a sort of GE-a source of managerial talent-for the Indian telecom industry when it finally opened up fully in the early 90s.

He died prematurely in 2003 in Bangkok, when he was still working with Lucent Asia Pacific.
