Mukesh Ambani joined Reliance in 1981 and was instrumental in
initiating the Reliance's strategy of backward integration from textiles into
polyester fibers and further into petrochemicals. He is credited for initiating
financial innovations in the Indian capital markets and Pioneered India's
forays into overseas capital markets with international public offerings.
Ambani established world's largest grassroots petroleum
refinery at Jamnagar, India, with a capacity of 5,40,000 barrels per day
integrated with petrochemicals, power generation, port and related
infrastructure, at an investment of Rs 250 bn. He also established the Reliance
Infocomm to provide information and communications technology services.
Ambani was chosen the Telecom Man of the Year 2004 by
VOICE&DATA in Sept 2004. Mukesh Ambani was chosen as the ET Business Leader
of the Year 2006. He was conferred the World Communication Award for the Most
Influential Person in Telecommunications in 2004 by Total Telecom in October
2004. He is the member of Prime Minister's Advisory Council on Trade and
Industry, Govt. of India, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, India,
Board of Governors of the National Council of Applied Economic Research,
Advisory Council of the Indian Bank's Association, Chairman, Board of Trustees
of The Indian Institute of Software Engineering.
