Nripendra Misra as the chairperson of TRAI has recently laid
down the 3G policy and has received appreciation from across the industry. As a
secretary of DoT, Misra kept a low profile and was instrumental in formulating
the broadband policy. Broadband was very dear to his heart. So, even after
retiring as DoT secretary, Misra assumed the reins as chairman of Chennai-based
C-DoT Alcatel Research Centre, a 51:49 joint venture between Alcatel and C-DoT
working on WiMax broadband solutions for rural telephony.
He has served in various administrative field positions as special secretary
finance, Uttar Pradesh. From 1981 to 1985, he was director in the IMF-World Bank
division. A 1967 batch IAS officer, Misra does not have a technical background.
But his Harvard degree in political science, and later various stints in
finance, taxation, and economic affairs, did help him in doing a successful
stint in Sanchar Bhawan.
