An alumnus of Delhi School of Economics, Rajat Kathuria was a
part of the team of TRAI that made competitive pricing in telecom sectors a
reality. It was the first time that an independent regulatory authority in India
was conducting telecom pricing and hence the political economy pressures were
immense. Given these pressures, it was challenging to be associated with a
sector that saw economics of telecom pricing to be subordinate to the political
urge. In spite of these pressures the team pursued their vision of creating a
world-class telecom infrastructure based on a model of competition. Kathuria was
a part of an excellent team that provided both credibility and legitimacy to a
new regulatory authority in the country
Author of numerous books, monographs and research papers on regulation,
pricing and emerging economy in relation to telecommunication reform, Kathuria
was awarded with British Council Fellowship to Manchester Business School,
Export Import Bank of India, Chair Professor Award, Best Teacher Award,
University College, College Park, and Two Economics Department Teaching Awards,
University of Maryland.
