No matter how small or late were the initial steps that the Tata group took
in telecom, the presence of Ratan Tata stood as an assurance that these
seemingly small steps in telecom had a bright and grand future. For good or for
better again, the presence of Tatas is now the perfect foil to the steamroll of
the Reliance Group in the telecom sector, ensuring greater consumer choice and a
larger amount of fair competition. On the long distance front, while the group
faced loosing market share after acquisition of VSNL, he has put India in the
major league of ILD players, with the acquisition Tyco and most recently of
Teleglobe International. His influence of the telecom sector goes beyond the
influence that Tete Teleservices or VSNL enjoy in the industry, as he is also on
boards the government's various committees and initiatives for helping the
government make policy decisions. He is widely recognized as taking a personal
role in the group's telecom activity.
