Rohit Sharma joined CIENA from ONI Systems, acquired by CIENA
in June 2002, where he was a member of the founding team and served as CTO
overseeing all aspects of technology development and strategic interests within
and outside the company. Prior to founding ONI, Sharma was with the Telecom
Research Labs in Canada. Sharma began his career with Optivision, a company
specializing in network-based streaming video solutions. In just two months
time, Sharma was the flag bearer of Optivision's telecom project division. He
began to entertain the idea of venture funding, and Vinod Khosla quickly
embraced the company's concept. In January 1998, ONI systems was funded and
spun off from the Optivision project.
Rohit Sharma's investment focus at MDV is on companies and entrepreneurs
employing cross-disciplinary innovations and applying computing, networking,
optical, and semiconductor technologies to current and new markets.
