As a director in the PM's office, he was also a member of the
six- member sub group on telecom constituted by the PMO and headed by KV Kamath
which was given the task of thrashing out the differences with DoT on account of
the some of the draft policy guidelines for the ensuing NTP 1999. DoT had
vehemently opposed the introduction of revenue sharing agreement.
Apart from the Kulkarni and Kamath, the group included NK Singh,
secretary in the PMO, Anil Kumar, telecom secretary, Ratan Tata, chairman of
Tata Sons, and PS Saran, member (services) in the Telecom Commission. He proved
to be vital link between the industry and the PM Atal Behari Vajpayee. The prime
minister trusted him for whatever feedback and suggestions that were conveyed by
him. On his part, Sudhirendra knows to respect the sentiments of the industry
and provided vital inputs to the PM which played a crucial role in the
formulation of the NTP 1999.
