For wrong or right reasons, she played a very important role
in the Indian telecom revolution. She was the Minister for telecommunications
when the industry was bidding for telecom licenses in the liberalized telecom
scenario. Others may have taken more important decisions regarding the future of
telecom in India, but Swaraj has to be given her share of the credit. Although
she was the minister of communications from March 19, 1998 to Oct 12, 1998,
those were eventful days before the NTP 1999 was brought out to set some order
into the muddle that Indian telecom seemed to be sliding into.
