A fighter for the cellular cause

TV Ramachandran has been with the COAI from 1997, as executive vice chairman till end 1999, and as DG from June 1, 2000. He is intimately involved with several important aspects like policy, licensing, regulatory, interconnection, etc relating to cellular mobile telephone service.

As CEO of Sterling Cellular from September '94 to January '96, he was keenly involved in the establishment of the first 100,000 capacity cellular networks in India, at Delhi, and the provision of world-class cellular service under the brand name "Essar Cellphone" (now known as Hutchison Essar). He was the founder chairman of the Indian chapter of worldwide GSM Association from '96 to '98, and is currently the chairman of the ITU's Regional Working Group dealing with Private Sector Issues (WGPS) for the Asia-Pacific Region.
