Taking Telecom Beyond Cities THE SAARC telecom industry’s biggest strategic and tactical brainstorming event, CEO Conclave 2007 is back. This year, the event is being held in Kathmandu in October 2007. The SAARC opportunity is immense. There are already 220 million lines (including fixed and mobile) in the region and the number is expected to grow to 300 million by end of 2007 – obviously a lot of that will happen in 2nd and 3rd tier towns, and semi-urban and rural areas. As the internet has evolved, telecommunications has forged ahead around the world to influence not just how people communicate and interact but how we run our businesses, occupy our leisure time, obtain our news and information, and even choose where to live. Modern, high-speed access is now critical to economic development. The observations and conclusions from the efforts of the past 10-15 years in India and its neighboring countries provide the guiding factors for the new efforts required for revamping and revolutionizing the rural telecom network in the SAARC nations, thus the theme – Taking Telecom Beyond Cities. Our vision and our theme “Taking Telecom Beyond Cities” is timely and achievable. By and large, the SAARC nations today have a long way to go, especially in the crucial areas such as telecom penetration, quality of service, adoption of new technologies, and affordability. It has been the endeavour of Voice&Data CEO Conclave to facilitate all of the above by getting the industry think tank together on the same platform. The objective is to push all the stake-holders including operators, equipment vendors, VAS players, regulators and industry associations to work towards a common goal. 100-110 participants from the SAARC region – India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and Maldives – are expected to participate. The audience composition is expected to be a mix of experts and top and senior management executives from varied fields.
