Designing the Cerebrum of Global Telecom
Lucent, Nortel, Alcatel, Ericsson, Nokia, NEC, Cisco… No it
is not a ranking of global telecom equipment companies. It is
just a partial list of the telecom clients of Wipro
Technologies.
Indian companies have come a long way from the legacy system
integration/Y2K fixing to development of technologies and
applications for the biggest technology segment of them all—telecommunications.
One company which has led them from the front is Wipro. In
2000-01, Wipro accounted for as much as 18 percent of the Rs
4034 crore worth of telecom software exports from India.
The most striking thing about Wipro is that in telecom
software, it is actually doing core network technologies
development, working at the protocol level in cutting-edge
technology areas. Its expertise spans from embedded systems to
wireless applications, from audio codecs to service creation
platforms. The company has also expanded into the service
provider practice, its billing solution being one of the hottest
telecom OSS products from India.
For Wipro, it is just the beginning, though.
